I can't remember when I started to first play anymore, but I remember well the moment I left the starter system and went exploring this strange new universe.
My first and oldest character was an Amarr, because lazors are kool!!! I was getting a feel for playing the game and felt pretty good after seeing how my new executioner outperformed my previous ship, a powerful combat vessel called an Impairor that vaporized hostile vessels with it's powerful laser weapon in mere seconds. I also had already upgraded some civilian modules to military ones, and I was confident I was well on my way to be a badass spacepilot.
I managed to jump a few systems without a problem until I encountered a dangerous situation. On the gate I noticed 2 player piloted Armageddon class battleships. There was a message in local "This space belongs to *can't remember* corporation. Leave immediately or be destroyed.". I froze and hesitated for a moment, then looked at the situation. System security was 0.6, a significant drop from the 1.0 I started from, so I knew it was the wild west here and I was on my own.
I was still thinking what to do, when the two ships got tired of waiting for my reply and a giant swarm of drones suddenly surrounded both battleships and started to orbit them in a menacing fashion. Soon after both ships started to blink and I knew I had to leave immediately or die horribly. I warped away to a random gate and left the system in a hurry with my heart racing.
After jumping out of the system I could finally breath a sigh of relief, since I was no longer in immediate danger of getting killed. I though I was lucky, since the guys were nice enough to actually give me the change to escape, instead of just firing on me without warning. I was in a small relatively cheap ship and they had expensive battleships, so the only reason for them to not engage me must have been that they were nice people.
I decided to stop the exploring for the day and visit the agent I had been told about. The world was obviously big with many dangers in store for the careless player, and I could propably use more money, experience and information before I was ready to face it all again.
Ah, to be a clueless noob again.
I don't actually miss much from the old days, although the drone swarms of the good old days were much more impressive. The new drone system is better though and the number nerf made sense, so I can live with the change. Most other aspects have more or less improved over the years, with some graphical effects being the only things that have actually gotten worse over time.
